EACEA, PIRLS and PISA (standard tests for schools) has shown a steady decline in reading comprehension from year 2000. And it's starting to look a bit alarming, as it currently states: 1/5 teenagers today can't even comprehend the simplest of texts. We can all contribute to stop this trend though, if you have kids, sit down and read books with them!
