Which is why there shouldn't be hate crimes in the first place. Hate crimes only serve to give a specific group protected status, when most crimes involve hate..as you just described here.

That's not true. There is no specific group of people that is protected. A racially motivated crime only requires that race be part of the motive, not that the victim be a member of a particular race.
possibly. the “spirit” of such legislation is solid - if a group is specifically targeted because something but if we gonna stretch this out to “I hate Elon” (this is 100+ million people in the USA, probably in the billion(s) worldwide) then killing the legislation makes more sense
Although additionally it's for groups whose members don't choose to be a part of. You can't decide not to be in a protected group the same way you can decide not to join a party or purchase a brand of something.
