Did anyone else have Ben Ari (eskimos and igloos) for their concurrency book as undergrad? Fortunately I never had to use "dining philosophers" in any real restaurant situation as we always had enough forks. I expect LLs take will be a very significant work.

I think that was set up as a problem, not the solution, to demonstrate that you can't just take take/release locks and call it a day. (I guess the modern equivalent would be 'synchronized' methods).


That's right. It's the set up for the discussion of semaphores etc.

Did bump into this [0] once though in the context of multi-user communications.

Also I just heard that "eskimo" is erm.. not cool. Sorry to any native Canadians. Hope I won't get the cold shoulder.
