Google to pay $700M and make tiny app store changes to settle with 50 states (theverge.com)

I like the changes, but the time limit seems crazy. The jury ruled there was harm to consumers, but in 4-5 years we are okay with them going back to business as usual or worse? (If this somehow doesn't get delayed forever via appeal)

To put the number in the title in context (quote from the article):

> $700,000,000 from Google in total (roughly 21 days of Google’s operating profit from the app store alone)

As I understand it, Apple still charged a 27% commission after they were ordered to allow alternative payment systems.

The commission has little to do with payment systems, and everything to do with platform fees - which is to say, enabling the platform/app store owner to collect money from sales of paid apps (mostly games) as well as "free" apps (mostly games) with paid IAP/DLC.

$629,000,000/ 140,000,000 Android users in the US (approximately) = $4.5/user. This is before taxes and legal fees.

Legal fees still need to be subtracted from that 629? I thought the 1M covered the fees

If I am understanding the article correctly, the 1M is for admin costs.

For 4-6 years WTF is this? So after that they just continue as they always did? These limits are stupid.
