I agree with your take. It also reminds me of those comments on youtube videos of classic rock songs (or any music older than 5 years at this point) that go along the lines of "I'm X years old, and I like this REAL music".

It always seems like the intent is for internet strangers to pat you on the back and tell you how special/precocious you are.
