> It is increasingly clear to me that running a globally compliant Internet business will soon be, if it is not already, impossible in several important domains. In two specific spheres, crypto and publishing, the problem is most acute. As the post-war international order fractures, so too does the Internet. The result is that soon Internet businesses in crypto or publishing will have no choice but to violate the law somewhere if they want to continue to exist.
There's 195 countries and more and more seem to have designs on creating specific narrow harsh regimes of supra-national regulation that they apply to the entire rest of the world, simply because those other entities exist on the internet these countries enjoy & connect to.
Brazil bullying the shit out of Google, not even allowing them to advocate their position in the lawmaking happeing, around Bill 2630, is just one of so many indicators. Brazil says there is no more safe harbor allowed, that big tech is responsible for all content is hosts, that it has to not just remove false content but has to ban any accounts that participate in fake content... well whose to say? Also fake accounts are not allowed. This feels like asking for a magical unicorn. How do these companies suss out what is true? What happens when India, which has similar incredibly-fascist leaning tendencies decides truth is one way and Brazil's board of oversight says truth goes another way?
Compliance is fucking impossible. These people are jackasses & fools & ridiculous. These idiots make mockery of themselves & the idea of law with their ridiculous & impossible demands. They far overstep. There's no sense that any of these nations understand that they are a mere part of the world: every one thinks they have complete power over everyone else, can do as they please. This is a sad dark pathetic future of literally everyone, nations and companies, walking across minefields forever. It's all impossible, there's no hope, there's no limitation on how stupid nations can be, and it's just getting worse and worse, and will be. There's no sense coming on the horizon. Everyone's Fear Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) is controlling them.
This is such a huge & unfortunate clash, of so much immense & pompous & ignorant & stupid self-importance, overriding any sense of what is reasonable or practical or scalable across nations. Law & nations are the loser here, because they have no actual way to win; the article is right: it's impossible.
