Nerds Are Trolling Tesla Owners by Wirelessly Opening Charging Ports (thedrive.com)

This reminds me of living in the suburbs with every wifi device using the same SSID from the manufacturer and me hosting a bunch of stuff at home (MythTV, web servers, etc) and dns pointing to internal ips — these days, I just host it all publicly with authentication). Friends had trouble staying on my WiFi because they would connect to someone else’s wifi nearby. So I wrote a phone app that connected to people’s routers, logged in with factory defaults and changed the wifi SSID to something from a random word list. Then I just went for a walk around the block…

This is harmless fun right? Like it's not like this will cause damage in anyway or impact security?

No, but this is a good demonstration of how insecure Teslas are.

You can steal a parked Tesla with a $10 homemade device.

If you can manage to crawl in via the charge port? :)

Yes, the port will close automatically. It is a bit fragile and vulnerable piece of thin plastic when open, but all in all a harmless prank.

The announcement for Flipper Zero was posted here not that long ago. Of course this is what people had in mind for it. :)

Yes really nice to see it having some real-world applications already. I might get one

What I find particularly humiliating is that to open the cap you have to issue a voice command, "open butthole". Really off-putting to say that sort of thing. Black mark against Tesla as far as I am concerned.

You're joking, right? You can basically say "open whatever" and it will open. And additionally there is a button on the screen and in the app and you can press the lid or press the button on the charger.

Is that the only command that works?

I bought small device off the internet and now I am being jerk with it, look how tech wizard I am.

I bought expensive car, which can be controlled by anyone with a remote control.

Stay mad, bud
