How can I host my own community these days?

I had an idea about hosting a forum like community on my product website to gain seo and traffic from that. Is there a go to solution for this? I remember when phpbb was the solution but I dont think there will be that many users willing to register on a solution like that now. The most common option I can think of is facebook groups, but that does not help me with traffic to my site. Is there another option or is this idea just not that good?

Discourse[1] is the only one I'm aware of. It's open source and pretty easy to self-host.

I'd be interested in any alternatives that people rate highly. In particular I have a client who wants forums and live chat in the same solution.

It wouldn't be hard to build what you want in Ruby on Rails.
