It's not so much that we don't care, but that the current jetpacks are so expensive, hard to operate, low runtime, and so unsafe that they just aren't relevant to most people. I'm not sure that the technology will ever improve enough to make the sci-fi style jetpack that anyone can use.
The only jetpack I've seen that I'd actually be willing to use is the kind that's more like a hose tethered to a water pump that lifts you a few feet above the water, that one looks like it'd be fun, with little chance of injury if it fails.
