Sad story (though of course there's always more than one side to any story!)
I hope folks are clueing into this by now, but flashy policies like "unlimited vacation" or "unlimited sick days" _are_ a scam. They sell well but never deliver what's on the tin. Instead, I'm a fan of "minimum X weeks PTO" or "minimum Y sick days". Any request under the minimum is automatically approved. Anything after is up to manager discretion.
