The problem is not using a GPL software internally, but using it in a product that you'd want to sell and at this point be forced to opensource your entire product. Despite what some people like to pretend there's basically no scalable business model outside of SaaS that will make you any money selling GPL-licensed software so this situation is extremely undesireable.
