If you had used a Mac or an Amiga, you wouldn't have those bad memories. Instead, you would fondly remember an era when software was pristine.
There also was a time when people just started to use C++ and software was much buggier.
I wouldn't even say software today feels much slower across the board, but it definitely far more wasteful, given the resources.
You can see a lot of software that essentially does the same things as it did 20 years ago, but (relatively) much slower. Try using some older versions of e.g. Adobe software, you'll see how snappy it feels.
