I think you'll find the practice of prefixing quoted lines with ">" originated with old Unix email and Usenet.



I’m rather young (on the border of Gen Y and Gen Z) so I guess I’m not old enough to have used either old Unix email or Usenet, so thank you for that tidbit.


No problem. Wasn't mean to be sarcastic, but reading back it may come across that way.


It didn’t come across like that at all. I found it very educational actually as I imagine that’s where Gruber/Swartz got the syntax from.
