It's unusual that they've affirmatively stated they're funding it, but it's not unusual for there to be a funder and it's becoming more common for details to emerge in discovery about who the funder is and what the details of the funding arrangement are. It's possible that Longford issued a press release because they know or suspect it'll come out in discovery and want to get out ahead of the issue.
