I'm not sure the OP was so much fearful of working with legacy code, but rather fearful of corrupting the resume to the point it makes you un-marketable as a programmer.
When making hiring decisions many organisations put great emphasis on the specific skill sets detailed in the resume.
As such it can become dangerous if you end up with a resume dominated with legacy coding skills.
