I agree. I tend to skim through articles and even books, and that's no good. Instead of the ten books I "read" last year, had I put in effortful attention, focused and thought through only two books last year, I would have come out ahead.


Thats very true, it's also true that most books don't demand a high level of attention. Most media in general is designed to require zero effort on the part of the consumer.

I just worked through 'Gravity's Rainbow' and was very mindful and careful in my reading. It was a great experience, but at the same time it was fairly boring in comparison to something like social media.


"Reader, Come Home" by Maryanne Wolf is a good book on the topic of how new technology influences our reading habits.

congrats! that’s one of those books that really needs a careful reading. it’s on my re-read carefully list but it’s so long and convoluted (in a good but challenging way) that i’ve yet to even think about starting.
