Google back in 2011 had one billion MAU. In that context, a $150k+ a year salary (plus equity etc.) for helping provide the content for those one billion MAU is plausible.
Also Google is a web intermediary for web sites with content for consumers. So Google benefits from the work of anyone who puts up a web site, contributes to Wikipedia etc. as well.
