If you don't mind me expoliating your situation. It's probably the issue because it's not fundimentally that much different than java. [It's more of a half step] Take some time, read Groovy in Action in depth. Get some experience with it. It can be a lot of fun when you have more experience. (As is the case with scala as well. but that's more of a full step in languages)
