That's a plaster over a wound. It would be better not to have sustained the injury in the first place - and the reader didn't create the pop-up.
My present interpretation of pop-ups is that the author or their publisher holds their advertisers or their subscriber list as more important than their content: in these circumstances it's reasonable to assume the content isn't worth reading. There are exceptions.
Yeah totally. Don't mean to do victim-blaming. But we still live in a bullshit world full of obnoxiousness where you should do things to protect yourself even if that's not fair to expect ideally.
