Matrix itself is being marketed to developers to build their apps using it. Vector is aimed at end users who want a chat system, and they don't really have to know or care what Matrix is. A good analogy is Matrix : Vector :: Email : Gmail

Except email and gmail are words that are clearly related (and suggest message transference) even for someone who doesn't know linear algebra..
