Or if it was made using recycled material (not the same thing as the first) Phones generally are not recyclable. I'd imagine there being a balance point of the volume of waste and the environmental effect.

People recover the gold. One ton of ore gives one gram of gold; you get about a gram from about 40-50 smart phones.
