I'm interested! Have been looking at this myself, but wasn't sure what form such a community / activity should have. This can of course be overcome by going one level up, and make the form one of the initial discussion topics.
Look into cognitive therapy / rebt, go see a therapist, and read up on it yourself. You can see it as a valuable activity both on a personal level, for your future and your family, as for your professional future. So appreciate working on that aspect of life! (ask for a certification from your therapist, jk :P)
Because it seems like you need to reframe things. There is enough uncertainty in the world as it is. You are doing a commendable job it seems for yourself and your family, but you can't control everything. A little less thinking in opposites would go a long way. You seem to be chasing certainty.
Why not allocate some time to work on a social cause? Don't worry about optimization, just start with doing something. Also nothing wrong with 'just' taking care of your own family, they are an important part of this world too!
It's nice to read all these experiences with open source games. Something wholesome about these things (not just nostalgia).
It also made me realize there should be an community driven overview / list of these things (genre, inspiration, description, screenshots, version etc). Does this exist?
- without notions of pressure from either social or personal ambition.
* if you want to give something a go, do it. Just don't hang it up on what others might think, or on some grandiose image.
- would a choice still be a success if it didn't match your ideal:
* if you get a less than ideal job in the US but you appreciate the adventure and opportunity?
* how about to a different country?
- can you appreciate the value of change itself? People grow and have rich lives through experiences.
- Choices are not right or wrong, its exploration following this semi meandering path with no clear destination. You can backtrack, change, explore, revisit etc.
- The children one you will have to figure out with your partner (And on your own) along the way.
kudos to your dad! (And you for trying to help). I feel like this issue is an overlooked aspect of our world, and often met with cynicism.
I agree with the suggestion to work on bank systems, or any place with old legacy systems that need updating. (he seems to have experience in that area?)
Any place where there might be a hidden bias for 'experience', even if your dad doesn't have knowledge of the specific language.
The other fields i'm thinking of is automation, or a mentor / teaching role?
Are former colleagues / peers of him still working? Maybe you can get some ideas via them.
This might be a weird idea, but what about: a laptop style wireless interface for a desktop computer. Does this exist? wireless display+bt keyboard+ bt touchpad
A more practical and commonly used solution would be to use a cheap laptop to remote into a desktop computer. I've known people who've used chromebooks for this exact purpose.
I'm aware that this is not what you are looking for probably, but on Hackaday there are multiple lorawan projects like this; https://hackaday.io/project/183966-off-grid-lora-communicato...
Though this is only for local communication, and i doubt you can get the parts in this time.
Most (if not all) satellite phones work with a subscription as far as im aware. I will try to research further.
Another problem is probably going to be to get fuel.
One of the options would be to get to kiev or another city to get to a train west. But thats a danger in itself; not knowing if they will still run. prime target area, not having a place to stay.
I just realized that the border might be problematic because it runs into transnistria.
[update] Google maps was a bit unclear about Transnistria etc.
I found there is a shared border below Transnistrian space with moldova called Palanca. And there is a route to somewhat avoid Odessa over smaller roads
A friend escaped with family to Poland Thursday, but they were lucky to live closer to the border (Lviv). A friend of a friend managed to escape the country by road driving west from near Kyiv yesterday, reportedly there were document checkpoints but otherwise no obstacles.
It’s hard to say for sure what is safe and what is safer given the rapidly changing situation, but I know in eastern areas there already are cities from which it is apparently no longer possible to safely get out due to military. No way in or out. I am intermittently in touch with people living there.
I worry about going into detail because aggressor agents may be monitoring this site.
Moldova's President says on Twitter their border is open and there's a large number of Ukranians arriving, among other places, Palanca, which is I think (?) in the convenient direction, on the Black Sea. I know nothing about the Transnistria situation but there is no Transnistrian territory between Palanca and Ukraine, according to the map on Wikipedia.
- "First citizens arrive in , with over 4000 crossings today. The govt has deployed temporary placement centers near Palanca and Ocnița. Our borders are open for citizens who need safe transit or stay."
edit: also the Prime Minister's photos clearly show that crossing point is open:
- "In these dark days for #Ukraine, we stand by its citizens. Visited the southern crossing of Palanca yesterday. #Moldova will assist those in need of safe transit or shelter. Вітаємо українців!"
I don't see how this affects their reliability? It is a community sourced overview, that partially relies on info given by virus scanners etc. It just shows the info it has, which in this case seems useful and correct?
The linked report says 30 "scanners" found an issue. That site in turn has community comments explaining about being careful with the installer because of adware being bundled.
Right below the warning about the report is a notice saying:
"Bundleware
The default installer contains Opencandy. A version without it is available in the Download page."

I use alternativeto.net mostly as a way to not google "alternative to x", and have to go through the junk results. I check out the top free / open source alternatives, read the comments, and visit their pages to make up my own mind.
