+1 for freezing unused apps. Would lower the attack surface nicely!

Interesting, so this isn't a standard Android feature? My Galaxy S-series phones have been doing this for years.

See my other comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40142394

If you give SuperFreezZ App stopper permissions (it needs to be registered as an accessibility service, and requires usage access as well) to check for usage of applications, then it will freeze unused applications automatically. You can even specify after how many days of not having used them you want to freeze them.

Samsung's Android flavour removes permissions from unused android apps automatically, and sends a notification to let you know. Close enough I guess.

fwiw this seems to be partially in place already.

Requests for access to files, location, mic, and camera usually give me the option of allowing them all of the time or only when the app is open.

I've also noticed system notifications stating that permissions will be used from unused apps.

Greater configurability is always nice though.

I disagree. 2022 mbp. Always plugged in... 5 charge cycles in total.

It seldom charges while plugged in. Even when down to 80% it alerts me it's not charging because I seldom use the battery.

Apple could change this behaviour silently and mess it up but for now it's perfect for my needs.

Spoiler: no.

I think they're referencing the character letter he wrote for Danny Masterson, pleading for a reduced sentence. Pretty hypocritical... to say the least.

Crimes in the US often have a large range of possible sentences (15 years to life in Masterson's case). The court has to figure out where in that range the particular person they are dealing with should be sentence.

Part of that involves trying to figure out how much of a danger the person is to society, and an important input to that is character witnesses (both favorable and unfavorable).

If a friend of mine was convicted of a crime and asked me for a character letter, I would probably write one giving an honest and accurate report of what I personally knew of them.

I don't see how that would be hypocritical, even if the crime they had committed went directly against something I advocated. Everybody deserves a fair sentence, and if someone involved in the case thinks I have useful information that might help with that I'll give it.

I don't think the letter [1] [2] does any pleading. Did Ashton Kutcher claim that sexual abusers don't have a right to character letters; otherwise I don't think hypocritical is an accurate description.

He obviously didn't know his friend very well if he never noticed the drugs his friend had though in all of the time they spent together.

That would explain why they added selection of multiple emails (after 10 years of request) for deletion im the app.

It was the only feature I was using the basic html for.

I thought b&w only was a gimmick until I saw the results. Removing various colour components from the camera allows for sharper and more light sensitive b&w photos... Also more b&w tones imo.

One thing you lose is the ability to filter out specific colors in post-processing.

I do mostly B&W these days, using an Olympus OM-1. The ability to mix the colors in post enables some real subtlety that it would be hard to reproduce using optical filters on a pure B&W camera. I was lusting after this camera (and the Leica monochromes, though they are way too rich for my blood) before I got my OM-1; but I think I'm happier with what I've got.

Man will burn tomorrow

"How dare you!"

Funny story. I have an email that keeps being flagged as "booked through an agent" even though I book directly through ryanair official app.

3 last bookings were flagged.

Only found out after numerous online chats and a call after 40 minute hold.

Ryanair has some of the best direct routes in Europe and often you get a bargain price. You get what you pay for.

I wish they introduced a "motorcycle" vehicle type. At least for cities, it makes a big difference in arrival time estimations.

Seems tougher to do estimation specifically for motorcyclists.

Some areas allow lane splitting, others don't. Some riders are on tourers that can't hop through traffic but can maintain highway speeds comfortably, others ride single-cylinder dual sport bikes that can't maintain 60 without taking a physical toll on the rider. And every rider has a slightly different risk tolerance, which translates to different behavior in traffic. I personally don't mind lane splitting between two semi trucks cruising abreast at highway speed, but I get anxious squeezing through cramped city traffic. And I slow down considerably anywhere a SMIDSY might happen, even if I have the right of way.

Also, it may be difficult for Google to identify who is riding a motorcycle from location data alone, which is what they would use to generate the motorcycle estimations. Not sure how they would do it...maybe using accelerometer/gyro data to identify inward leans during turns? The assumption being that cars will lean outwards, while bikes will lean inwards.

They did that recently in India - not sure if and when they'll roll it out to the rest of the world.

I sometimes got the impression they do but still present it as car. I've got highly unrealistic driving times of a car in Bangkok that were very close to my actual driving time on a scooter for example.
