I am currently finishing a dual major in Math and German. I was originally in Mechanical Engineering, but after teaching myself VBA in order to solve various problems in manufacturing environments I fell in love with programming and have been doing it for fun ever since. In addition to my Bachelor's study I am completing an Associates in CS online as I try to transition away from ME. I am highly interested in moving to the Bay Area, Chicago or any EU country (particularly Germany/Austria/Switzerland, Spain, UK/IRE)

The math is correct but this doesn't factor in inflation, so you probably need to change the original salaries down to whatever $40k in todays money was worth in 2009. That leads to 34k*(1.18)^10 = 178k, which seems much more reasonable

Are you forgetting about the change where all new homes in CA have to have solar panels? We already are moving towards mass adoption of solar, that doesn't stop us from exploring other options that work in less sunny places, at night, etc. Solar won't work everywhere.

What are some features that you would look for in a laptop so that you could still be using it in 10 years if you bought it new today?

- User upgradable/servicable parts, notably the battery & HDD

- All hardware supported by open source drivers in the upstream Linux kernel

- Durable frame

- Standard ports which have already been shown to stand the test of time (USB, 2.5mm headphone jack, and HDMI)

- x86_64 or RISC-V architecture

At least a 1080p IPS screen and a decent keyboard (no chiclets) with plenty of travel (I don't care how thick it makes the laptop).

I recently watched a TED talk by Peter Singer that went into Effective Altruism pretty well

To be fair, as an American I don't even need to go to Europe to prove how little non-US geography I know. I can't even name or point to any Mexican or Canadian regions except for British Colombia

Everyone heard of Beautiful British Columbia, that's where I live, after all :D

Maybe you've heard of Quebec?

Ive heard of Quebec and Sesq... however you spell it, but BC is the only one I could point to on a map

Is this mac only?

Zeal is a good offline code docset reader for linux and windows (but not mac!)

https://zealdocs.org/

The docsets come from Dash, which is very nice since that is payware. So here apple users pay for non-apple users it seems :)

Use Dash on mac, Zeal on NixOS.

I see it as a no-brainer for anyone who has more code to write than time to write it. I can't always solve a problem in Dash, but it enables me to work for hours at a time with wifi off. This is even more important for productivity when there is wifi available. Only downside that I know I'm reducing my chance of stumbling on Google Foobar trigger terms :)
