Worked for a few years as a firmware engineer after undergrad (CS) but decided to get into education. I'm nearing a decade of teaching high school math and computer science in the US and abroad. I picked up another degree along the way (Georgia Tech's OMSCS) to keep my skills sharp. I'm now thinking of making the switch back into tech, preferably something related to education and/or games.

I went for a Master's in Education and became a teacher. Teaching computer science and math so still STEM adjacent. I'm still teaching a decade later and I've moved abroad to teach at international schools, currently in Bangkok.

Love to hear you're still teaching a decade later - I'm starting my Masters of Teaching next week to become a math teacher!!

What do you think the biggest mistake that people who don't last as a teacher make?

In Thailand at least, this is due to the high number of motorcycles/scooters. They're far more likely to die in a collision (about 80% of the fatalities are from motorcycles)

I think the simplest repeating word sentence is using "police". It isn't as impressive since it only employs two meanings rather than three but is much easier to grasp.

Who polices police? Police police. Police police police police.

But then who polices police police? Police police police. Police police police police police police.

Repeat ad infinitum. n-Police police (n-1)-police

When police police police, we sometimes get oversight oversight.

Wenn Fliegen hinter Fliegen fliegen, fliegen Fliegen Fliegen nach.

A flea and a fly in a flue. Said the flea: "let us fly", said the fly: "let us flee" and they flew through a flaw in the flue.

In Dutch the word order is a bit better: als achter vliegen vliegen vliegen, vliegen vliegen vliegen achterna.

In german you can also say: Wenn hinter fliegen Fliegen fliegen, fliegen Fliegen fliegen nach. : )

Sadly, police demonstrably do not police police.

No, no. Police don't police police, police police police police.

Police stop staying police.

No. More police police.

Because that’s the jurisdiction of the police police. Did you not read the post to which you responded?

What is it called when a word stops making any sense inside your brain temporarily because of over exposure.

Semantic satiation

The wikipedia page listed in another comment makes the point that this also (can) use three meanings, as Police is also a place in Poland.

The police police from Police Poland police the police from Police Poland: Police police police police Police police

This makes an interesting philosophical point on ethics and self awareness

Nice, I knew this site only because I used it to play their Thai wordle: https://buddhistuniversity.net/wordle-thai/

When asked in court what was meant by the term "woke," Ron DeSantis' general counsel said "the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them." Other than using the modifier American, the parent comment's use of the term woke fits very well with this definition.

I've used Credit Unions my whole adult life and agree with you. Though I am now in a position that they don't work as well for me: living abroad. I've run into lots of small issues over the last few years so I caved and opened an account at a commercial bank for the first time to help decrease the friction.

I switched to teaching at the secondary level and after a couple years teaching in the States, got into international teaching and it has been great. There's good and bad about specific jobs but my overall experience has been positive.

I did this 16 years ago and it has been a good ride. I will say that unless you want to move into administration, which to me would be a special sort of hell, then there is no upward mobility. You will end up teaching the same thing after awhile and it can get boring. I'm actually taking time off this year and doing some education related work and possibly looking at jumping back into tech for a bit.

What do you mean by international teaching? In other countries? If so, which one(s)?

He said he's going to teach high school computer science. As someone who made the same leap, it's cool to hear! He was really awesome about giving his games to teachers to use in their classrooms for free.

He tried teaching for a year but sounds like he isn't going to stick with it.

“I just finished my first year of teaching and Last Call BBS hasn’t even been released yet! I was hoping that I’d really like teaching and stay with that for a few years, but I learned that’s definitely not the case and I’m having a hard time imagining anything other than games in my future, in some shape or form.”

Actually, he is going to quit teaching high-school computer science to continue working on games.

Normal is different for different people. It feels much more natural for me to breathe through my mouth. But I suppose the fact that "mouth-breather" is an insult meant to attack one's intelligence is a sign I'm in the minority on this.
