I think you're over-assuming that people's "achievement level" is a completely general, fixed number, when there are a lot of suggestions that it's more situational.

There is some suggestion that the supply of graduates isn't well matched to job market needs, which usually manifests in people being opposed to anything that isn't STEM. But that's not the same thing as an argument about achievement.
